Bridgetown and WW2 : 1939-45
In a speech which was broadcast throughout the Commonwealth on Sunday, 3 September 1939, the Prime Minister of Australia, Mr R. G. Menzies, announced that, as a result of the British declaration of war, Australia also was at war with Germany.
Many able bodied citizens of Bridgetown and surrounding areas volunteered for active duty. Some were to return. Some sadly weren't.
The Bridgetown Historical Society is paying homage to its heroes of the day by presenting an exhibition in honour of a number of servicemen and women from this locality.
The exhibition is being held in the Bridgetown Police Station 1880, Hampton Street each Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. Entry is by way of a gold coin payment.
